Insects

Digger Bees in the Landscape

There are several kinds of small hairy or metallic bees that dig into the soil to nest, hence one common name, digger bees.

Ant mounds in lawns and sidewalks

There are many species of ants that occur in lawns or along and under sidewalks. Most ants are beneficial and do not require control.

Planting Tender Perennials in the Garden

Tender perennials are attractive additions to the home landscape. Since they are not reliably winter hardy in Iowa, tender perennials must be planted outdoors each spring.

Diseases of Arborvitae in Iowa

Arborvitae (Thuja spp.) trees and shrubs are appealing and reliable plants for the Iowa landscape with few significant pest or disease problems.
