What are some easy to grow vegetables?

Question:

What are some easy to grow vegetables?

Answer:

There are a number of vegetables that are relatively easy to grow.  Peppers, bush beans, leafy greens, and even tomatoes often make the easy to grow vegetable lists.  Be sure to select vegetables that you are most likely to eat as you are more likely to properly maintain them.

There are a couple of things to consider when growing your first vegetable garden.  All vegetables prefer full sun and well-drained soils.  Vegetables perform best when receiving at least 1 inch of rainfall or irrigation a week.  Vegetable gardens need to be regularly weeded to prevent competition from weeds for light, water, and nutrients.  And lastly, most vegetables have fewer disease problems when rotated to a new site each year.  Therefore, all vegetable gardens require planning prior to planting and regular maintenance each week during the growing season to be successful.

While this list is somewhat subjective, the following vegetables are often considered some of the easiest to grow:

  1. Tomatoes
  2. Peppers
  3. Green Beans
  4. Potatoes
  5. Zucchini

There are many other vegetables that can be considered relatively easy-to-grow for novice gardeners like:

  • leaf lettuce
  • kale
  • sweet corn
  • winter squash
  • radish
  • basil
  • cilantro

These vegetables and many others should be considered when starting your first vegetable garden.
