When and How to Prune Shrubs and Trees

Time is drawing short to finish major pruning on fruit and shade trees in the landscape.  February through March is generally regarded as the best time to prune most deciduous trees.  Pruning is a combination of the art and science of horticulture and is based on an understanding of how plants grow and why pruning is necessary.  Learn more about pruning trees and shrubs in the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Yard and Garden news release from February 20, 2014.
