New for '93

If there is still a spot in your flower or vegetable garden for something new, one of the 1993 introductions may fit the bill.

New annual flower varieties include Zinnia 'Pinwheel Mix'. This zinnia possesses good mildew resistance and is available in white, salmon, cherry, orange, and red colored flowers. Plants grow to a foot tall with 3-inch flowers. It is available from W. Atlee Burpee Company. The French marigold 'Safari Primrose' boasts 3-inch flowers on mounded 12-inch foliage. Marigolds are known for their heat tolerance and 'Safari Primrose' is no exception. This variety should be available in many garden centers this season. For those gardeners looking for the durability of the marigold in white, 'French Vanilla' marigold is what you ordered. The plants grow to a bushy 2-feet tall with 3-inch, odorless flowers. 'French Vanilla' is available from W. Atlee Burpee Company.

Another white addition this year comes in the flowering cabbage 'White Xmas'. Its frilled white rosettes will make an eye- catching autumn display or an unusual cut flower. Thompson and Morgan supplies 'White Xmas'. 'Tropicana' is new in the annual vinca line. It is available in four shades of pink with large blooms even during hot weather. Vinca 'Tropicana' is available through Park Seed Company. The Metro series of nicotiana puts on a good show in hot weather as well. The plants grow 10 to 14 inches tall. Flowers are available in 5 separate colors or a mixture. 'Metro Red' is especially attractive to visiting hummingbirds. The Metro series is available from W. Atlee Burpee Company.

New perennial introductions include Clematis 'Multi Blue'. It has double violet-blue flowers which cover the plant from late spring until summer. Decorative seed pods follow in the fall. Spring Hill Nurseries offers 'Multi Blue'. For daylily enthusiasts, 1993 offers several new varieties. 'Springtime Princess' is a miniature with raspberrry pink flowers. It has a red eye zone and chartreuse throat to complete the picture. It is available from American Daylily and Perennials. 'Still Night' has beautiful burgandy petals. Floyd Cove Nursery is the source for 'Still Night'. 'Tune Maker' has deep rose colored petals and is available from Saxton Gardens.

Hosta collectors were not forgotton in 1993. 'Northern Exposure' is a variegated sport of Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans'. It has a heavily corrugated texture with blue-green leaves edged in jagged margins of creamy white. Flowers are near white and appear just above the foliage. Busse Gardens offers 'Northern Exposure'. Hosta 'Albiqua Delight' has glossy lime-green leaves edged with buttery yellow. 'Albiqua Kaleidoscope' has golden green leaves with blue-green edges. Both are mid-sized hostas and are available from Walden West. 'Pinwheel' is a miniature hosta with white and dark green leaves twisted into a pinwheel configuration. Savory's Gardens offers 'Pinwheel'.

New in bulbs is the canna 'Durbin'. Its unusual foliage is striped with orange, yellow, purple, and green. Flower color is orange. Kelly's Plant World is the source for 'Durbin'. American Daylily Perennials introduces 'Liberty Bugle Boy'. This canna is a dwarf variety with orange red flowers splashed with yellow.

In the vegetable garden save a spot for the brussels sprouts 'Bubbles'. It is warm weather and drought tolerant. Harvesting will begin approximately 82 days from transplanting. Stokes Seeds is the supplier. 'Lumina' pumpkins are nice 8 to 10 inch size with orange flesh and white skin, which is an interesting change of pace from the normal orange varieties. 'Lumina' is available from Park Seed Company.
